im looking to get a new pc, affordable but powerful, and i came across this HP rig...
•Core 2 Quad Q8300 (Y) 2.5 GHz (95W)
•1333 MHz front side bus
•Memory Installed 4 GB
•1 TB SATA 3G (3.0 Gb/sec)
•5400 rpm
•GeForce GT220
•1 GB memory
•High Definition 8-channel audio
price wise i think its in the $750 range... any thoughts?
i might get a different hard disk with higher speed, or just get an additional 10k rmp one for the OS only. _________________ Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts |

GeForce GT220 i would replace this old Nvidia technology with Ati 5770 512Mb for 158$ (that price is here in EU)
Iam satisfied with that GPU now and itll be enought at least for eve few next years.
I read about Incarna that some brand new technologies which work with lighting etc will be aplied so ill not buy old card now.
That 5770 could be enought for next 5 years in EVE
btw> i would rather buy for few bucks old 8800GT from bazar and later buy better then invest to GT220 |

I personnally hate ATI so i would replace by a 3xx nvidia if you still want to stay in low cost. The problem with the 5770 ATI is that this GC is an almost high end GC, the Trix nvidia 220 is a low end one. I don't know which are the equivalent ATI models.
5400 rpm looks to me a bit poor. 7000 or more looks better to my opinion. Especially with your quad core CPU.
Quad core, why not, really usefull for calculations and especially 3D rendering (maya, max, etc), but not sure for the rest. The new intel Dual Core technology looks nice (i3, i5). i7 is the same new tech for quad cores though.

well, as for the cpu, i thought quad core was better than the dual core.... but im still looking for i7 which would be my first choice. for some reason most desktops have been either pulled from the market or not replenished, so getting a new pc will be a bit tougher than i thought...
i know the 5400 rpm is low, thats why i said i might get a different one or add another one... but it like i said just now, this model is no longer available, actually, according to the vendor its a pretty old one.
and the graphics card was the minimum req for the projector im getting.
optima EW536
DLP Projector
3D-Ready
gonna play eve in 3D /me starts dancing...
anyways, i ran into a guy from acer today, says he'll build the comp i want. so im goin for an i7, high rpm hard disk, ddr3 ram. but the graphics card is a bit of an iffy, which should i be loking for? 200 series or 9 series? which is better/cheaper? (ps, i want to stick with ge-force for 3D compatibility with the projector. _________________ Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts |

Concerning the CPU, quad core of x GHz is better than a dual core of x GHz, of course. But the gain is not linear. A 3GHz dual core for example, is better than a 1,5 GHz quad core, but well, that is not very important anyway. CPU is just good when you have heavy calculations to make, as for video montage or 3D rendering (they are splitting the task between all the cores, thats why professionnals enjoy opterons for 3D).
9000 series is older than the 100 and 200 series. The 9000 are based on the 8000 technology, with some tweaks. Still good on the high-end products though (the 9800 GTX is equivalent to the GS 240 in terms of power : i had this one before i bought a GTX 285 and it worked very well, and EVE was running full options activated in 1900 x 1280). But i think it is better to aim for the 100, 200 or even the 300 series : newer tech, lower price for the power gained (high end cards, even in older series, are still expensive, in comparison : i have the 240 available for 75€ and the 9800 GTX still at 130€, even higher than the 260). No idea for the prices in your country though, but i suppose the scales should be the same.
But well that's up to you. If that is for a laptop, you will have huge difficulties to get a high end card anyway, so the middle end GCs of the newer series are the best choice. For a classical PC... No idea, but if you want something very powerful and capable of running games with really good graphics, go for the 260, 275, or even higher nvidias if you still want a nvidia GC. If not, you still have the middle end : the 240 for example, still very good. The good thing with middle end cards is that they does not make a lot of noise. |

| Nothing wrong of course, but the fact is that laptop GCs are generally "mobility" versions of their desktop counterparts. That means smaller limited cards of the same model. And when you want to go for a high-end GCs on a laptop, you have to put more than 1500€ in the laptop (even more, around 2000 € somtimes if you want something as much as powerful than a good desktop pc made for gaming). And i'm not even sure the high-end cards in those beasts laptops are as much as powerful as a classical one (considering their size is normally around 25cm lenght, 15cm wide, 5 cm height with a huge cooler, what is not possible in a laptop). |
